Off Road Back-Country African Safari Survival Skills CME

Wild Med Adventures is joining forces with Phoenix Expedition Medicine to combine continuing medical education (CME) with a unique wildlife safari and practical off-road skills course in Kenya. Our vehicle based African camping expedition and community conservation medicine course is truly an experience you won’t find anywhere else.
The course encompasses a week long vehicle based 4x4 camping safari in Kenya’s South Rift just north of the border with Tanzania in the Maasai owned Olkiramatian and Shompole community conservation areas. These areas are semi-arid rangelands which provide dry season grazing refuge for the Maasai’s livestock, whilst simultaneously fostering eco-tourism and wildlife conservation based around the traditional co-existence of people and wildlife. The areas have large populations of a wide diversity of animals including lions, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, leopard, zebra, wildebeest, and giraffe to name a few. The conservation fees for our stay will contribute directly to the community’s efforts.
This area of The Great Rift Valley is full of interesting geological and geographic features, not least the two alkaline soda lakes of Magadi and Natron which are home at times to hundreds of thousands of flamingos.
We will spend the week camping right in amongst this wildlife, learning how to safely live and operate in this environment. At times down there, one can seemingly be surrounded by the calls of lions as they communicate with pride members after dark. Listening to this sound as you lie in your tent is an unforgettable and invaluable life experience in itself. The safari conditions will be comfortable. The day to day planning will be flexible and we will deal with daily tasks and any issues as one would on any expedition. The whole experience will be full of learning and we anticipate that medics attending will be able to claim at least 19 CME hours.
This is NOT a luxury safari experience during which you will waited on hand and foot. The ethos of the trip is very much an expectation that you will “get your hands dirty” both around camp and when using the vehicles. We hope to give you a genuine African safari under a canvas camping experience whilst earning learning wilderness medicine skills and arming yourselves with some expertise and confidence to consider your own African overland camping expeditions. There will be a strong teaching emphasis on the use of 4x4s on expedition, including bush mechanics.
Medical teaching will focus on local diseases and risks pertinent to the environment. We will also interact with and learn from local community members and conservationists to understand how people co-exist with wildlife in this area and the conservation and health challenges that exist. We will learn bush craft skills, interpret animal tracks, and experience the environment on foot. We’ll game drive to watch animals during both day and night and sip cold drinks round the campfire.

Obtain CME and Fellowship credits from the Wilderness Medical Society towards your FAWM
Our program focuses on treatment of the most common injuries and illnesses encountered while in the African backcountry.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Intended as continuing education for physicians, PA's, NP's, nurses, and medics who aspire to work or teach as a field instructor/provider in austere environments or who may work in remote clinics and deal with the injuries sustained by off road mountain bikers.
Graduates from other wilderness medicine programs (e.g. FAWM, MFAWM) who want to gain experience and skills in Remote Medicine
Individuals pursuing a Fellowship in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM™)
Anyone Interested in off-road travel with a fun group of people
