Luke LeBas MD, FACEP, FAAEM, FAWM
Luke LeBas is an emergency medicine physician based out of New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in South Louisiana Cajun country and from an early age he was exposed to the hunting and fishing lifestyles for which the area is known. His primary love of the outdoors revolves around
duck hunting with his father, and he continues these adventures to this day. After completing medical school at the American University of the Caribbean on the island of St. Maarten and then an emergency medicine residency program in Jackson, Mississippi, Luke then returned home to Louisiana. Luke says that the greatest highlight of residency was when he was awarded the inaugural resident teaching award at graduation. For eleven years he worked at one of the busiest academic trauma centers in the U.S. but he now works in a rural community hospital setting. During his time working at the renowned Charity Hospital in New Orleans he enjoyed teaching and working with EMS, residents and medical students. In his new role as a community-based EM provider he is lucky to still have a role in the education of medical students and residents.
Luke was introduced to the concept of Wildness Medicine and to Wild Med Adventures around eight years ago when he came upon an advertisement for an adventure CME trip to Arkansas for duck hunting. After this conference he was hooked and for the past eight years he has attended numerous Wild Med trips around the world and has become a regular instructor for the company. One of his greatest joys is bringing his father along for these adventures.
In addition to completing his FAWN certification and his work with Wild Med, he is still activewith resident education, EMS and is also very active in both state and national political advocacy efforts on behalf of emergency medicine. He serves on the board of directors for the National Emergency Medicine Political Action Committee (NEMPAC).
Going forward Luke is considering the possibility of running for political office. He also intends to stay active with the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), working on important state and national legislation for the betterment of the specialty and his patients. Finally, he will continue to work enthusiastically with Wild Med Adventures as an instructor, using this opportunity to travel the world looking for new adventures to share with his dad.
